Abstract

El principio básico de la televisión analógica tradicional es distribuir el contenido radiodifundido a los usuarios finales, por lo cual la televisión se considera un medio pasivo. En la actualidad, la televisión digital va más allá de los contenidos televisivos, pues proporciona servicios multimedia que pueden ser interactivos, lo que implica que los usuarios finales han de tener la capacidad de interactuar con la transmisión y requiere el empleo de dispositivos de hardware y software diseñados específicamente con estos fines. En nuestro país, hace algunos años se ha venido implantando la televisión digital bajo la norma China DTMB, a partir del empleo de dispositivos de fabricación china con software privativo diseñados para estos. La no disponibilidad del código fuente del software de dichos dispositivos, las bajas prestaciones de los componentes de hardware y la falta de documentación de estos componentes, imposibilitan el desarrollo de nuevos servicios de valor agregado que brinden una mayor interactividad a la televisión digital en Cuba. Debido a eso, en este trabajo se propone el diseño de los componentes de hardware y software para un prototipo de set-top box empleando una placa base de propósito general y un sistema operativo basado en componentes de software libre, lo que permitirá una independencia tecnológica y brindará facilidades para la implementación de nuevos servicios con un alto valor agregado.
