Abstract

El término virtualización es ampliamente utilizado en el marco de las Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones formando parte de distintos conceptos y técnicas que se aplican en las redes de computadoras actuales. En todos los casos, la virtualización es una estrategia que, básicamente, permite integrar y compartir recursos y de ahí la importancia que adquiere en el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y en el surgimiento de nuevos servicios.

Con el objetivo de brindar una panorámica general sobre la virtualización, en este artículo se realiza un corto recorrido por su surgimiento e historia, se especifican una serie de conceptos relacionados para luego mostrar los tipos de virtualización que se consideran ampliamente difundidos en este ámbito. Se relacionan, además, los aspectos en los que impacta desde una visión general y abarcadora, ya que son los que promueven su desarrollo. Culmina con una relación de empresas líderes en estas técnicas y algunos de los principales productos desarrollados hasta la actualidad.
